Department of Philosophy

Established in the academic landscape of Vivekananda college in 1950, the Department of Philosophy has been an integral part of this institution. A significant milestone was achieved in 1978 with the introduction of honors, projecting the department into a new era of academic importance and comprehensive education. What sets our department apart is its commitment towards striking a balance between the practical, everyday aspects of human life and the intricate and abstract nature of philosophical analysis.

The faculty members, the backbone of our department, play a crucial role in shaping the character of our students. Beyond imparting academic knowledge, they actively cultivate a culture of respect for others and foster the maintenance of dignity in all circumstances. This holistic approach extends beyond the classroom, aiming to nurture individuals who are not only academically talented but also possess a strong ethical foundation and a well-rounded personality.

A standout expression of our students' creativity and engagement is the annual publication of our wall magazine, affectionately named ‘অন্বীক্ষা’ Each year, students contribute interesting articles and expressive drawings, exploring into relevant social issues connected with philosophy. Recent themes have explored complex subjects like Secularism, Ragging, and Life after the Covid-19 pandemic. Notably, during the challenges posed by the pandemic, our students showcased remarkable adaptability by transforming the physical wall magazine into a digital PDF format, ensuring the uninterrupted dissemination of their ideas.

The organizational skill of our students shines through in the whole execution of various events, including farewells, freshers' welcomes, and Teacher's Day celebrations. These annual gatherings not only reflect the vibrancy and cohesiveness of the student community but also underscore the students' adeptness in organizing and managing events with finesse, showcasing their leadership and teamwork skills.

Beyond the boundaries of the classroom, the department organizes tours that expose students to the rich cultural heritage of India. These experiences serve as windows into diverse traditions, fostering a broader perspective and a deeper appreciation for the cultural tapestry that surrounds them. The aim is to not only nurture academic excellence but also to instill cultural sensitivity and a global outlook among students.

At the core of our department's mission lies the overarching motto — to bring forth not just academically proficient individuals but, more significantly, good human beings. Our students embody this philosophy by excelling not only in their studies but also actively participating in quizzes, sports, and various cultural programs. This holistic approach to education ensures that our graduates are not only intellectually adept but also socially conscious and culturally sensitive, ready to navigate the complexities of life with integrity and compassion.

In essence, the Department of Philosophy at our college transcends being a mere academic institution; it is a dynamic community dedicated to nurturing individuals equipped with both intellectual acumen and a strong ethical foundation. The synthesis of academic excellence, social engagement, and cultural exposure creates an environment where students authentically embody the department's noble motto of becoming not just scholars but, fundamentally, good human beings.
