Department of Environmental Science
The Department of Environmental Science pioneers the field of undergraduate study of the subject running the first ever UG (Hons.) course in Environmental Science under University of Calcutta. The departmental laboratory is well equipped having a number of scientific instruments of Environmental monitoring including assessment of water, soil and climatological parameters. Seminar lectures have also been arranged to provide the students with better exposure of the subject. Students have undertaken several activities in the college including campus cleaning, tagging the trees as a part of observing important days like Earth day, World Environmental Day etc. Regular weather monitoring and recording is being done by this department, as a part of research and academic activity. Every year academic excursions are organized in different areas to expose the students to varied environmental set up.
Recently the Department organized a two days UGC sponsored National Seminar along with the Department of Chemistry and succeeded to gather nearly 15 top academicians of the country in addition to more than 150 students, scholars and faculty members from several academic institutions.
The Department publishes a newsletter ENVOICE containing writings of students on Environment. It has published the edited proceedings of the seminar and several picture posters on biodiversity.
The faculty members are engaged in different research activities even involving some of the students and shares their experiences with all the students.
The Department is proud of having 100% success rate (All above 55%) for its first outgoing batch with 64% students securing 1st class with a highest mark of 74.5% (CU 1st Class First).
