Department of Geography

The Department of Geography spread its petals from 2014-15 academic session. Currently the Department is served by four faculty members along with two non-teaching staff. The Department is run through fully equipped laboratory, computer room (for training GIS software) with ICT facility along with separate theory class rooms. From 2015, the Department initiated its co-curricular wing ‘Geo Club’ inaugurated by the honourable Principal, Vivekanada College for encouraging the creativity and thrive among the students of the Department beyond prescribed curriculum through poster competition, debate, quiz contest and so on. Besides, the Department had organised special lectures on September 16, 2015 and 2017 successively to mark the ‘International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer’. Dr. Deepanjan Majumder, Senior Scientist, NEERI and Dr. Gupinath Bhandari, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Jadavpur University, delivered their thought provoking lectures on those occasions respectively. Recently a day long workshop on ‘Qualitative & Quantitative Research Methods in Geographical Studies’ was successfully conducted on February 12, 2018. Prof. Ashis Sarkar, Dr. Sukla Basu & Dr. Rahul Bhattacharya delivered their expertise to the participants on that occasion. On January 12 & 13, 2019, the Department is going to organize an International Conference on ‘Society and Sustainability: An Interdisciplinary Approach’ in collaboration with ‘The Eastern Geographical Society’ of P. G. Department of Geography, Utkal University, Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, which will assuredly be added another feather to its crown.
